Onion Cultivation

Onion Season

Onion cultivation in Antequera consists of two growing seasons. The first is known as early onion or “babosa”, which is characterized by its delicate skin and requires a significant amount of manual labor for harvesting and care. The second is called late onion or “reca”, which, due to its thicker skin, allows for the use of modern mechanized harvesting methods. These methods have enabled our farmers to become much more competitive with this product.

The early onion harvest takes place mainly in June, and the product must be marketed immediately after harvesting. The late onion harvest occurs from the end of August to the end of September, allowing it to be stored for up to 4 months.

Available for sale all year round.

TONS

The total production from both growing seasons is approximately 11 million kg, cultivated over an area of 200 to 250 hectares. The early onion harvest requires an average of 35 workdays per hectare for harvesting and care. The late onion harvest requires between 18 and 20 workdays per hectare, while handling and packaging centers require 10 to 11 workdays per hectare.

Grading up to 200,000 kg per day

Horticultores El Torcal has a reception and grading center capable of processing 175,000 to 200,000 kg per day.

Handling and packaging

Approximately 30% of the total production is sorted and packaged into 1, 2, 10, 15, and 25 kg formats at the cooperative’s facilities.

To achieve this, the cooperative operates a reception and grading center capable of handling 175,000 to 200,000 kg per day, along with a dedicated packaging line for preparing the above-mentioned formats.
The rest of the production is sold directly in the field to clients, who carry out the same packaging processes as our cooperative.
